Jan Luca Sestak is a nineteen year old pianist, born in Celle (Niedersachsen). “New Way” is the title of his new album. This work shows a complex musical world, a particular personality and a talented creative musician. Blues, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, Funk, Pop and classical music are mixed and matched in a project that will surprise and enchant many listeners. We have exlusively interviewed Luca in order to be acquainted with his charming music.
Jan Luca Sestak è un pianista diciannovenne, nato a Celle (Niedersachsen). “New Way” è il titolo del suo nuovo album. Questo lavoro mette in mostra un mondo musicale complesso, una personalità particolare ed un musicista creativo e talentuoso. Blues, Boogie, Woogie, Jazz, Funk, Pop e musical classica sono i generi musicali mixati in un progetto che sorprenderà e incanterà molti ascoltatori. Abbiamo intervistato Luca, in esclusiva, per entrare in confidenza ed approfondire la conoscenza della sua travolgente musica.
When and how did your passion for music begin?
Well, when I started playing – better said – when my father wanted me to start playing piano I didn’t like it, I hated it. Progress was very slow and I preferred to play outside with friends instead of practicing silly musical scales and everything. As far as I can remember the passion for music started when my piano teacher let me play a Beethoven Sonata. That was the first time I played something which I have heard before, something that sounded serious and the first time I said to myself: “Hey, this is fun!”. That was when I was about 11 years old, so 2 years after I started taking classical lessons. Then everything went very quickly, I discovered a jazz version of a classical song and that fascinated me immediately. I looked up the Internet for jazz and came to blues and boogie woogie. I was captured.
Quando e come è iniziata la tua passione per la musica?
Beh, quando ho cominciato a suonare, o per meglio dire, quando mio padre ha voluto che cominciassi a suonare il pianoforte, non mi piaceva, lo odiavo. I progressi erano molto lenti ed io preferivo uscire a giocare con miei amici invece di star lì a studiare scale musicali e cose simili. Per quel che ricordo, la passione per la musica è iniziata quando il mio Maestro di pianoforte mi lasciò suonare una sonata di Beethoven, Quella fu la prima volta in cui suonavo qualcosa che avevo già sentito prima, qualcosa che mi sembrava autorevole, e per la prima volta, mi sono detto: “Hey, questo è divertente!”. Tutto questo accadeva mentre avevo l’età di 11 anni, ben 2 anni dopo che avevo cominciato a prendere lezioni di musica classica. In seguito tutto è arrivato molto velocemente, quando scoprii la versione jazz di una canzone classica, ne rimasi affascinato. Cercai su Internet per capirne qualcosa in più e arrivai al blues ed al boogie woogie, sono stato catturato!
What did inspire the title of your new album and what are the messages that you would communicate to your public?
As I just said, I discovered Boogie Woogie and that was the genre that I played most of the time since then. Over the years I got to know other artists like Vince Weber and James Booker, which are both ingenious and very creative pianists in my opinion. Blues music from Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles… Jazz by Oscar Peterson and Jaques Loussier fascinated me as well as funk and even contemporary pop & rock music. Last but not least, I listened more and more to classical pieces – Chopin & Liszt are my favourites.
I guess all of that affected my playing, as I was fascinated by the chords and the rhythms that were used in all those great songs out there, so slowly and maybe sometimes even unconsciously I mixed elements, chords and rhythms from all these music styles with the style I played before. Now, I tried to capture the result of that in this album and I think the mixture of songs and styles is somehow a “New Way” for me as well as for the listeners who know my first CD.
What messages I would like to communicate the public? I want to get people, especially young people to get into piano and blues/jazz music again. I want to show that piano music is neither boring nor always the same. To be honest, I just want to share my music with the world and I’m happy for every person whom I made happy with my music.
Cosa ha ispirato il titolo del tuo nuovo album e quali sono i messaggi che vorresti comunicare al tuo pubblico?
Come ho già accennato, quando ho scoperto il Boogie Woogie è subito diventato il genere che suonavo di più. Nel corso degli anni ho conosciuto altri artisti come Vince Weber e James Booker, due pianisti veramente ingegnosi e creativi, a mio parere. La musica blues di Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles…il Jazz di Oscar Peterson e Jaques Loussier mi hanno affascinato così come il funk, la musica pop ed il rock. Penso che tutto questo influenzi il mio suono, così come sono stato affascinato dai ritmi e dagli accordi usati in quei fantastici brani, allo stesso modo mi sono messo, a volte anche in maniera inconscia, a mixare elementi, accordi e ritmi tipici di questi stili, con quello che io suonavo prima. Stavolta, ho provato a trarre le somme di questi esperimenti in questo album e penso che il mix di canzoni e stili rappresenti, in qualche modo, un “New Way”, una nuova via, sia per me, che per gli ascoltatori che conosceranno il mio primo disco. Quali messaggi vorrei comunicare al pubblico? Io vorrei conquistare le persone, specialmente quelle giovani, e avvicinarle alla musica jazz/blues da pianoforte. Voglio dimostrare che questo tipo di musica non è noiosa e non è nemmeno sempre la stessa. Ad essere sincero, vorrei condividere la mia musica con il mondo e sono entusiasta per ogni persona che io rendo felice con la mia musica.
Your compositions and interpretations express your personal style by including blues and boogie through jazz and funk… how do you mix and match notes and feelings?
That’s a good question, the answer is: I don’t know. As I said, sometimes it happens even unconsciously. I don’t tell myself: “Now I have to mix this with that!“ and so on. It just kind of “happens“. I play what my heart says, what my mood wants and what my feelings dictate.
Le tue composizioni e le tue interpretazioni esprimono il tuo stile personale ma includono anche blues, boogie woogie, jazz e funk… Come mescoli e misceli le note e le emozioni?
Questa è una bella domanda, la risposta è: Non lo so. Come ho già detto, spesso questa cosa succede in maniera inconscia, non mi dico mai: “Ora devo mischiare questo con quello” etc… Si tratta, piuttosto, di qualcosa che semplicemente “accade”. Io suono quello che il cuore mi dice, quello che la mia anima desidera, quello che le mie emozioni mi dettano.

Which is the theme you love the most?
What a difficult question! Every theme has its own character. If I’d have to choose I’d pick the themes of “Walk With The Devil” and “Blame Game”. They’re pretty catchy and I remember lots of people having an “earworm“ of their themes after they have heard them, which is important for a song, you know.
Qual è la canzone di questo album che ami di più?
Che domanda difficile! Ogni canzone ha dei tratti precisi ma, se dovessi scegliere, mi concentrerei su “Walk of the Devil” e “Blame Game”. Sono orecchiabili e ricordo che molte persone continuavano a canticchiarle dopo averle ascoltate e questa cosa, come sapete, è molto importante per una canzone.
Can you explain the birth of “Blame Game”? This song seems to inspire mystery…
Everyone argued sometimes about important or less important things. So did I (most often with my parents). For me “Blame Game“ kind of illustrates an argument, I don’t know which one, and I can’t remember if any one was the exact birth of the song but what I know is that “Blame Game” is pretty much how I’d express an argument through music.

Così come ciascuno di noi litiga per cose più o meno importanti, così ho fatto io (molto spesso con i miei genitori). Per me “Blame Game” parla di una lite, non so quale, e non so ricordare se qualcuna sia stata l’occasione per la scrittura del brano ma quello che so è che, quel “Blame Game” è il modo più carino con cui io possa descrivere una lite attraverso la musica.
What about “Walk With The Devil” and “Dr James”?
“Walk With The Devil” is a song inspired by the great music of the New Orleans pianist, composer and singer James Booker. He always tried out new rhythms, melodies and mixed styles.
So you have that kind of modern bass in the left hand, which imitates the drums and bass like a rhythm section of a band, giving the tune its special groove and the theme/improvisations in the right hand.
“Dr. James” is also related to James Booker, as you can guess by its name. The tune was originally written by a pianist named Henry Butler as a tribute to Booker. I discovered it years ago on the Internet and for a long time I was sure it must be a song written for two pianos because I just didn’t know how to play all the notes, scattered all over the piano. I immediately fell in love with the funk rhythm and melody of this song when I heard it.
Cosa ci dici di “Walk With The Devil” e di “Dr James”?
“Walk With The Devil” è una canzone ispirata dalla grande musica di James Booker, un pianista, compositore e cantante di New Orleans. Lui si è sempre cimentato con nuovi ritmi, melodie e stili mescolati. Da un lato hai qualcosa di molto simile alla sezione ritmica di una band, dall’altro c’è un particolarissimo groove, frutto di improvvisazione estemporanea. Anche “Dr James” è legata alla figura di James Booker, così come si evince anche dal titolo del brano. Il tema è stato originariamento scritto dal pianista Henry Butler, come triburo a Booker. L’ho scoperto vari anni fa su Internet e, per molto tempo, sono stato convinto che si trattasse di un brano scritto per due pianoforti, dato che non riuscivo a capire come suonare tutte le note disseminate lungo tutti i tasti del piano. Mi sono immediatamente innamorato del ritmo funk e della melodia di questa canzone quando l’ho sentita.
Does “Maymories”include some remembrances of your past?
Well spotted. Very special remembrances of a very special time for me which I’ll surely never forget. I had the feeling that I had to sort of “archive“ these remembrances in addition to my memory, in a song. Although the song might seem sad, for me it’s a mixture of different feelings like nostalgia, happiness, sadness as well as hope.
“Maymories” include qualche ricordo del tuo passato?
Ottima intuizione. Sì, ci sono ricordi molto speciali per me che sicuramente non dimenticherò mai. Mi sono sentito come se una specie di archivio di questi ricordi si fosse infiltrato in una canzone. Sebbene possa sembrare triste, questo brano per me racchiude svariati sentimenti: nostalgia, felicità, tristezza e speranza.

Can you tell us something about your musical references?
I could tell you for hours! There are so many… I often mentioned James Booker as well as Vince Weber. Vince is a German Boogie Woogie and blues pianist who was mainly active from the 70’s to the late 90’s. In the Boogie Woogie scene he’s well known for his complicated and groovy bass figures. But there are so many like Ray Charles, Dr. John, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters and several other blues, jazz and new Orleans musicians. What also influences me is pop, rock, electronic and R’n’B music of today. Of course classical music plays a very important role too.
I think everything you listen to influences your music. As a musician, you can’t do anything about that.
Ci parli dei tuoi riferimenti musicali?
Potrei parlarvene per ore! Ce ne sono così tanti… Spesso ho menzionato James Booker e Vince Weber. Vince è un pianista tedesco, legato al blues e al boogie woogie, che ha operato soprattutto dagli anni ’70 agli anni ’90. Nello scenario Boogie Woogie, lui è conosciuto per le sue complesse scale musicali. Ad ogni modo ci sono tanti altri musicisti come Ray Charles, Dr. John, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters e altri ancora, coinvolti nella musica blues e jazz di New Orleans. Quello che, inoltre, mi influenza, è la musica pop, rock, elettronica e R’n’B di oggi. Naturalmente anche i grandi artisti della musica classica svolgono un ruolo importante. Penso che tutto quello che ascoltiamo possa influenzare la nostra musica. Da musicista, non puoi farci semplicemente nulla.
What are your perspectives for the future?
Of course, my dream would be to make a living from music. But I’m afraid that, that will stay a dream for now. This autumn I’ll go to university – and I hope that it won’t take too much time and effort so that my piano doesn’t have to suffer from it.
Quali sono le tue prospettive per il futuro?
Naturalmente il mio sogno sarebbe vivere di musica ma temo che questa cosa, per adesso, resterà solo un sogno. Il prossimo autunno andrò all’università e spero che questo non mi prenderà troppo tempo così che il mio piano non debba soffrirne troppo.
Where and when will you play during next summer?
There are few specific plans as yet. It’s hard to plan something because of the university. But I have a request from a jazz festival in Tunisia and I’m planning to do a lot of gigs here in Germany.
Dove e quando suonerai la prossima estate?
Ci sono pochi programmi specifici per adesso, è difficile pianificare qualcosa, soprattutto per il discorso legato all’università. Ad ogni modo ho avuto una richiesta per un festival jazz in Tunisia e sto organizzando una serie di tappe in Germania.
Will you came to Italy? Have you got any friends in our country or is there any musicians you would collaborate with?
I have a very good friend in Rome who helped me participate in a great jazz festival in May 2013 (the photos on the cover of the CD were made there). And yes! There are some plans to do some gigs in Italy in the spring/summer of 2015. I don’t want to promise too much but if everything goes well there will be some concerts there.
Verrai in Italia? Hai amici nel nostro paese? C’è qualche musicista con cui vorresti collaborare?
Ho degli ottimi amici a Roma che mi hanno aiutato a partecipare ad un bel festival jazz lo scorso maggio 2013 (le foto della copertina del disco le abbiamo scattate lì) e sì, ci sono delle tappe in Italia in programma, presumibilmente durante la primavera/estate 2015. Non vi prometto nulla ma, se tutto va bene, ci saranno anche dei concerti da voi!
